RESEARCH EXPEDITIONSEncounter whales
and dolphins in the wild

Have you been lucky enough to observe marine animals in their natural habitat?

When whales or dolphins emerge from the depths of the ocean, it’s a moment deeply imprinted in our memory.

For more than 20 years, Ocean Custody has been researching whales, dolphins and other marine animals in cooperation with its local partners. Interested volunteers can support this work on-site. Thanks to our projects, we know how populations are developing and to what threats they are exposed. This knowledge makes it possible to develop, or call for, protective measures. Would you also like to become active and take part in a research expedition in the Mediterranean Sea? This is possible with our partner organisations. An unforgettable experience awaits you.

Research expeditions are in English.

our partner projects

Alnitak, Balearic Islands

Join the Alnitak team in the Tramuntana – the spectacular northern mountainous coastline of Mallorca and embark on a scientific expedition focusing on dolphin and sea turtle conservation. In parallel, you will actively work alongside artisanal fishermen and other sailors to minimise the threat of ghost gear. When it isn’t possible to work at sea, we will build up an old mountain house nearby, making it into our Alnitak basecamp for years to come.

Ionian Dolphin Project, Greece

The Ionian Dolphin Project is dedicated to ensuring the long-term survival of dolphins and monk seals in the coastal waters of the Eastern Ionian Sea. During your stay you will be part of the Ionian Dolphin scientific team involved in marine mammal research and conservation. You will work side by side our researchers and help to conduct daily surveys at sea.

Morigenos, Slovenia

The waters off the Slovenian coast and in the Gulf of Trieste in the northern Adriatic are home to a resident population of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Over the course of 20 years of scientific work, Morigenos has been able to determine that some 150-200 dolphins live here all year round. You will go out to sea every day to locate these fascinating marine mammals. You will record their movements, behaviour and environmental data and learn the techniques of dolphin research.
